Alabama A&M sees record number of applicants, expects record 2023 enrollment

Alabama A&M University celebrated a record total of 9,757 accepted freshmen to date for fall 2023.

The college beat its own previous record of 9,039 acceptances set in 2019, and is on track to beat its freshman enrollment record of 1,694 students also set in 2019.

So far, there have been more than 15,000 applicants to AAMU this year, a 30% increase from last year. Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Braque Talley says the growth is “not accidental,” and that he is pleased with the outreach to students and families from different backgrounds.

AAMU has also seen an increase in transfer students coming to campus.

“These numbers are indicative of the strength of our programs and the value students see in earning an education here on the Hill,” Director of Admissions Dwayne Green said.

AAMU was one of three public schools in Alabama that continued to freeze undergraduate tuition in fees from 2022-23, according to a statewide survey from the Alabama Commission on Higher Education. The other two schools are The University of Montevallo and The University of West Alabama.

According to AAMU, it’s the largest HBCU in Alabama, with about 6,500 students on campus. It boasts the largest number of minority STEM graduates in Alabama. About 52% of AAMU STEM majors are women.

According to federal data, 85% of students receive financial aid and 69% of students are Pell Grant recipients. The school reports that about half of students have their cost of attendance covered by aid.

May 15 is the preferred admissions deadline for fall 2023 students.
